Sod Care Maintenance

The contractor will be responsible for watering your sod for a short period this spring / summer. Property owners will be responsible for watering and care of your new sod as soon as the contractor watering period concludes. A notification will be mailed to you when the contractor watering period concludes.

To help the new sod take root and stay healthy, your assistance is appreciated.

  • We recommend giving your lawn one inch of water per week, spread out over three watering applications (one-third inch during each application).
  • Lighter waterings are not desirable, as they encourage shallow roots instead of deep roots.
  • Lawns need deep roots to help them withstand periods of little or no rain.
  • The roots of new sod require about one year to reach their full length.
  • Set the mower deck at the highest setting and cut the new sod with this setting for the first year. Your new sod will die if you cut it at the same setting as the one you ordinarily use to cut your mature lawn and the City will not replace it.
  • Healthy grass height for established lawns is around three inches.
  • Please see this short video for recommendations.
