Open House for Community Input - April 6th

An open house is set for 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 6, to share information about a way to connect Edina’s Promenade Park to the South Cornelia and Parklawn neighborhoods.

The City has been exploring ways to better connect neighborhoods and destinations that are separated by the busy traffic on France Avenue in the Greater Southdale District. This effort dates back to 2008 when the City considered constructing a pedestrian bridge, sidewalks and crosswalks at strategic locations from 66th to 76th streets.

With complete redevelopment of privately owned commercial properties in the 7200 block of France Avenue, a new opportunity arises to improve the pedestrian environment while still serving drivers. While many different design options were investigated in 2023, the recent focus has been a broad pedestrian underpass that is integrated into the landscaping of the newly constructed buildings. Other options have been considered, including an over-the-road bridge, but it would severely affect private properties and driveways. Hennepin County’s traffic department wasn’t supportive of pedestrian-oriented improvements on the street level.

With two new buildings currently taking shape on the west side of France Avenue and groundbreaking coming soon on the former Macy’s Furniture site, the City should make a decision whether to continue exploring this underpass concept. Input from stakeholders and the general public is sought to inform the City Council in its decision-making.

At the open house, at the new Fire Station #2 at 4101 W. 76th St., work to date on the concept will be shared. Attendees will be able to view concept sketches, layouts and video renderings, which also can be viewed on the project website, EdinaMN.gov/FranceCrossing.

A brief presentation will start at 6:15 p.m. and repeat at 7:15. However, this is a drop-in style event, so people are welcome to show up anytime that works for them. They’ll be able to ask questions and fill out a comment card to provide feedback.
