Vernon Avenue Roadway Modernization and Multi-Modal Improvement Project

Vernon Avenue from Villa Way to Interlachen Boulevard is a four-lane roadway with turn lanes. As a County Road, it carries over 12,000 vehicles per day currently and is projected to carry 15,000 vehicles per day by 2040. While this half-mile long corridor is adequately designed for vehicles, it lacks in pedestrian, bicycle and transit infrastructure. Existing sidewalks are narrow and right next to the roadway, bike lanes end at W 53rd Street, and bus stops are not very accessible or comfortable.

The Vernon Avenue Roadway Modernization and Multi-Modal Improvement Project will redesign the corridor to improve safety and mobility for all modes of transportation. The street would be reduced to a two-lane section with turn lanes and the sidewalks would be replaced with wider shared-use paths on both sides to accommodate pedestrians, cyclists and transit riders. These improvements together support the goals in the City's Comprehensive Plan, Living Streets Plan, and Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan.

The full concept layout can be found in the Document Library on the main page.
