  • Color palette of playground
  • Play equipment features

Decisions that have already been made include:

  • Playground intended to remain in same footprint in park
  • Playground sized to appropriately service neighborhood users
  • Capital budget allocation of $150,000 for the project

Project goals/process include:

  • Include play equipment for age groups 2-5 and 5-12
  • Meet accessibility requirements
  • Replace the pea gravel surface with sustainable wood chips
  • Work directly with the community throughout the process to ensure concerns and aspirations are consistently understood and considered
  • Provide multiple concepts to share with residents and receive feedback
  • Make a final design concept recommendation to Edina City Council
This project page will be updated throughout the process.

Thanks for helping us create a new playground together!

Sunday, April 28, is your last chance for the kids to play on the Walnut Ridge playground… because the new playground is coming early!

The new equipment, chosen by park users and nearby residents, arrived earlier than expected. So instead of waiting until the end of summer, we're rushing to get it installed in time for summer break from schools.

To do that, the existing playground will close Monday, April 29, to remove the old equipment and pea gravel surface. Then we have some preparation work to do.

Illustration of playground equipment including climbers, swings, slides, walkways, spinner and more in green, brown and tan colorsThe new equipment is scheduled to be installed starting May 13. It usually takes at least a couple weeks (assuming the weather cooperates) to do the full install and put in the new surface. Park Maintenance then performs a safety inspection before the new playground can open.

Playground users and nearby residents chose the green and brown color scheme and the various equipment, including a special Tree-O climber.

Feel free to stop by and watch the removal and installation - from a distance. Please keep children (and you eager adults!) out of the playground area during the process. Even if it looks safe, it might not be until the final inspection is done.

We'll let you know when the new playground is ready for you.

While the playground is closed, you can visit the playgrounds at these closest parks:

    • Countryside Park, 6240 Tracy Ave. S.
    • Fox Meadow Park, 5251 Blake Road
    • Heights Park, West 66th Street & Hillside Court
    • Highlands Park, 5200 Doncaster Way
    • Yancey Park, 5520 Hanson Road

Or visit the Park Finder at EdinaMN.gov/ParkFinder to find all the Edina parks with playgrounds.

Thank you to everyone who provided feedback in our first survey. Playground designers will be taking that information and preferences and creating a wonderful design based on your information about theme, age of users, and components you would like to see in your playground. They will also be using the playgrounds you liked and comments you left as inspiration and information to make the best design for the neighborhood. Once designs are submitted we will post them on Better Together Edina for review, comment, and voting by the community. We will also be asking what color theme would be preferred.

Please check back at Better Together Edina early this Autumn for the next round of surveys. Playgrounds will be installed the spring of 2024.
