  Are you an Edina community member passionate about climate action in the face of a warmer, wetter and more unpredictable climate?

  Do you want to get the word out about Edina’s new Climate Action Plan, which aims to reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions 45% by 2030?

  If you answered yes above, then “CAP-in-a-box” is for you!

  The CAP-in-a-box is a toolbox designed for Edina community groups and members interested in spreading the word and taking action on climate change. Community members can use the toolbox of resources to meet with groups and lead a discussion of ideas for strategies and activities they can undertake to help fight climate change. Groups might include garden clubs, recreation leagues, youth groups, faith communities, civic groups or neighborhood groups.

  Who should use this “CAP-in-a-box?”

  CAP-in-box is a tool for those interested in:

  • Tackling climate change
  • Sharing Edina’s Climate Action Plan
  • Connecting to a community groups open to learning more about climate action in Edina and ways they can be involved
  • Practice public speaking and presenting to a groups

  What do I have to do to use this “CAP-in-a-box?”

  Just a few steps and some are optional. Instructions and all materials are available on this project page here on the right-hand side.

  • Download and customize the “CAP-in-a-box” Templates for your community group
  • Schedule a presentation time with your community group
  • Optional: Share the meeting details with the City: who are you presenting to, when, how many expected attendees, and any resulting actions or follow-ups with the group
  • Request any printed materials from the City one week prior to your meeting by contacting Sustainability Manager Grace Hancock at ghancock@edinamn.gov.
  • Present to your community group and gather any questions or follow-up actions
  • Optional: Share any follow-up questions or actions with the City

  
  

  Every volunteer is invited to email the City’s Sustainability Division (ghancock@edinamn.gov) about their community climate action meeting and request any printed materials beyond the digital resources provided. Volunteers have the option to submit an after-meeting report, sharing any community feedback or questions with the City about climate action in Edina.

• City Council Approves Edina's First Climate Action Plan

  Edina, Minn., Dec. 9, 2021 – Energy and environment champions say Edina is now a deeper shade of green.

  The City Council at its meeting Dec. 7 approved Edina’s first Climate Action Plan. The plan outlines strategies and actions to support achieving increased climate resilience, reductions in local greenhouse gas emissions and further advancement of the City’s sustainability goals.

  The plan includes 200 actions that can be taken in Edina to meet goals by 2030. The City’s greenhouse gas emission reduction goals are to be compatible with the 2015 Paris Agreement and target a reduction in City operations and communitywide emissions by 45 percent below 2019 levels and achieve net zero emissions by 2050. Goals are arranged under the categories of Transportation & Land Use, Water & Wastewater, Buildings & Energy, Local Food & Agriculture, Green Space & Trees, Climate Health & Safety and Climate Economy.

  “Approval of this plan ties past diligent work toward a healthy environment in Edina to a future where long-time community members and newcomers alike can thrive,” said Sustainability Manager Grace Hancock. “It's been a joy to provide space for this plan to be developed in a way that is welcoming and equitable, and I'm excited to build on this strong foundation of community partnership as the City begins implementing this road map for a resilient Edina.”

  Development of the extensive plan took 11 months by a team of 26 people who considered feedback from almost 450 residents. The Climate Action Plan Team included residents and businesspeople Mindy Ahler, Kate Ebert, Sean Ewen, Sarah Irwin, Janet Kitui, Ana Martinez, Hilda Martinez, Lou Miranda, Jack Miller, Connie Mitchell, Rick Murphy, Bill Sierks, Paul Thompson, Gael Zembal.

• EEC approves CAP at Oct. 14 meeting

  The Edina Energy & environment Commission received the draft Climate Action Plan from the Climate Action Planning Team at their regular meeting on October 14. The EEC approved the plan with minor edits, and will recommend that City Council adopt this plan at a Council meeting scheduled later in 2021.

  Edina's Climate Action Planning Team has completed a first draft of the city's first climate action plan. Review the full plan here and add your comments and questions by October 1st, 2021.

  Translation Services: If you would like to translate the full Draft Climate Action Plan, please download the file (link above) and use this online translation service.

  Engage in person: volunteers will promote the CAP in person at September Farmers’ Markets (Thursdays, 3-7pm at Centennial Lakes Park) as well as at the Fall into The Arts Festival (September 11-12, 10-5pm, Centennial Lakes Park).

  Follow the process: The CAP team, made up of 16 community members and 8 city staff, have met seven times over the course of 2021 to craft the plan. After public comment, the Energy & Environment Commission will receive the plan at their regular meeting on October 14 for review and comment. In December, the EEC will recommend a final plan to City Council for adoption.

  A Climate Action Plan (CAP) helps a community identify what kind of natural and built environment they want to enjoy in the future, and what actions should be taken now to ensure that future.

  
  

  In Edina, the plan will help those who live and work in Edina imagine and achieve a future where the Earth and all who live on it thrive. At the center of the plan are the City’s values of environmental stewardship, community equity and engagement.

  
  

  The CAP includes the following parts:

  • Climate Baseline – includes a community greenhouse gas Inventory, climate vulnerability assessment and identification of existing actions already underway in the community.
  • Action plan – the Planning Team agreed on community goals and identified actions to be taken to meet them.
  • Community Engagement – community members receive information and opportunities to share their opinions about what to include in the plan.
  • Implementation – a successful plan includes what steps to take once the plan is written and the community is ready to start taking action.

  The City has introduced a new tool for the public to stay informed of City commitments and progress on these goals related to environmental sustainability and resilience in Edina.

  The City of Edina's Environmental Performance Dashboard shares information about the city's efforts and progress towards the sustainability goals outlined in the Environment chapter of City of Edina’s 2018 Comprehensive Plan. This tool will also serve to reflect key performance measures as the city pursues the focus areas of the Climate Action Plan.

  Developed as a storymap - this dashboard outlines the City of Edina's goals to address climate change and continue to build a city where all can thrive. It is divided into seven sections listed at the top of the page, and users can click on each tab to navigate to a particular topic. Users can scroll down in each tab to see background information, goals, progress, accomplishments and more.
