Concept drawing of sections of Fred Richards Park with main trail in red running thorugh it.

Fred Richards Park is being created from the former Fred Richards Golf Course. The 43-acre site, almost double the size of Centennial Lakes Park, will become a multi-use park for a variety of activities year round.

Fred Richards Park will subtly divide into sections, providing different experiences for people and nature. It also includes what was formerly known as Lake Edina Park.

Central Green includes

  • Pickleball and basketball courts
  • Lawn games and stage/pavilion areas
  • Clubhouse renovation
  • Landscaping, turf and walkways
  • Parking and access via West 77th Street

The Nature Bank includes

  • Wetlands mitigation bank and nature restoration
  • Trees and shrubs
  • Play nodes
  • Wildlife habitat structures
  • Boardwalk and trail

Great Lawn and Loop includes

  • Pedestrian bridge restoration and new trail
  • Great lawn area with high-quality drainage
  • Picnic pavilion
  • Traditional and inclusive playgrounds

The $17.7 million in funding will come from the half-cent sales tax Edina voters approved in November 2022.

Thank you for reaching out with your question and interest in Fred Richards Park.  Fred Richards Park's construction is funded by a local option sales tax that was passed by voters in 2022.  For more information about the process please visit EdinaAtPlay.org.  This project will be enhancing amenities of the former Fred Richards Golf Course and existing Edina Parkland.  Centennial Lakes Park another beautiful park in Edina was created and made possible as part of a 100 acre development through TIF funding.  For more information on TIF funding please visit "Tax Increment Financing (TIF) in Edina" on City of Edina's website.

  • Share I moved here two years ago from Green Bay WI, and was very surprised at the lack of community gardens. With a population of over 106k compared to Edina’s 52k, and a considerably smaller density, we had, when I left, 12 community gardens. They were managed by a citizen board in conjunction with the county Ag Dept. Considering the growing population density, I would think, having access to a small garden plot would be a very attractive community amenity. Why is there no community garden in your plan. Gardening helps combat food insecurity, provides fresh produce to food banks, is good exercise, builds community, and provides educational opportunities. Please consider adding this to your plan. on Facebook Share I moved here two years ago from Green Bay WI, and was very surprised at the lack of community gardens. Thank you for your interest in Fred Richards Park.  Gardens were looked at during the creation of this plan in 2017 but were not part of the approved plan.  Though formal community gardens are not being considered for this space at this point, an edible landscape and food forest is being considered.  This element along with other features in the original plan will be open to comments from the public later this spring before we continue to development and implementation.

The city currently support a community garden at Yorktown Park and a giving garden at Lewis Park.  The Climate Action Plan developed by the City identifies strategy LF 1-2 which identifies importance of gardens.  Both the Energy and Environment Commission and Parks and Recreation Commission have items on their workplan to study and report on current city process and how it could be expanded and adjusted within the park system and broader Edina community.

Thank you for reaching out and we hope you will continue to share with us as we continue through this project.
