2023 event has concluded.

The City of Edina is hosting a Juneteenth celebration for the whole community from 4-8 p.m. Monday, June 19, at Centennial Lakes Park, 7499 France Ave. S.

Juneteenth, which commemorates ending the enslavement of African-American people in the United States, became a federal holiday in 2021 and is an observed City holiday in Edina.

This year's family-friendly event will feature live music, readings, a story stroll and other children’s activities, food trucks, and a beer and wine garden sponsored by Edina liquor.

Admission, parking and all activities except the food trucks and beverage garden are free.

Children's Activities

  • Story stroll featuring "Black Is A Rainbow Color," the debut children's book from Minneapolis native Angela Joy
  • Plant a Plan where children be able to plant and take their planthome to watch it grow
  • Book giveaway: "Black Is A Rainbow Color," "The History of Juneteenth" by Arlisha Norwood and "All Different Now" by Angela Johnson.

Live Music

  • Carolyne Naomi - blends influences from soul and R&B to reggae and gospel
  • Smooth Jazz - trio that incorporates jazz, jazz fusion, R&B, pop and other genres
  • Carnage the Executioner - rapper and beatboxer

Also on Stage

  • Master storyteller Nothando Zulu
  • Readings on the history and importance of Juneteenth

Food Trucks

  • StuffDMN makes American comfort food such as burgers and sandwiches.
  • VB&J’s, which stands for Veggie Burgers and Juices, also offers sandwiches, bowls and wraps.
  • Soul to Soul BBQ is known for its Memphis-style barbecue.
  • Lutunji’s Palate creates Southern-influenced desserts and offers plant-based options.

Several local organizations whose mission or programs celebrate, uplift and elevate African American and Black experiences and voices will be on hand to share what they do.

    The City of Edina’s Juneteenth celebration will feature live music, activities for children including a story stroll, food trucks from StuffD MN, Soul to Soul BBQ, VB & J (plant-based) and Lutunji’s Palate bakery., beverages from Edina Liquor, and representatives of local businesses and organizations that actively work to celebrate, uplift and elevate African American and Black experiences and voices. Musical acts will include Carolyne Naomi and Tre. Charles. Admission is free; all are welcome.
