This sign variance received approval at Planning Commission on April 12, 2023.


The applicant is requesting a sign setback variance for monument sign associated with a new building at 6500 Barrie Road. The request is for a 5.5 foot setback variance to allow for a monument sign to be placed 14.5 feet from the curb adjacent to 65th Street West, on the north side of the building.

The required setbacks for monument signs is 20 feet from the travelled portion of the road (the curb). This site is allowed two monument signs and two wall signs-one per each street frontage. The proposed signage shown, with the exception of the setback of the monument sign adjacent to 65th Street West, meets the other requirements of the city's sign code.

    Thank you for your question. The proposed monument sign on the north side of the property is oriented north/south. The proposed sign is illuminated. One of the proposed conditions of approval that staff has recommended is approval with Sec. 36-1655: 

    Sec. 36-1655. - Illuminated signs.

    Illuminated signs shall comply with the following requirements:

    (1) No sign shall change in either color or in intensity of light more frequently than once per hour, except signs giving time, date, temperature or weather information.

    (2) All incandescent bulbs or fluorescent tubes, except neon, LED or fiber optic light sources, shall be shielded with an opaque or translucent material.

    (3) No sign which is visible from a residential district, located within 200 feet of the sign, shall be illuminated between 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.; provided, however, such signs may be illuminated at any time when the use identified by the sign is open for business.

    (4) The planner may specify additional restrictions regarding the hours of illumination as a condition to the issuance of a permit.
