Why does the bridge need to be replaced?

Because of its age, condition and accessibility limitations, the bridge must be replaced. Originally built in the early 1960s, the bridge is accessible only by stairs and does not meet current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) or state height standards. The bridge sustained heavy damage after being struck by vehicles twice in 2022.

    When is construction happening?

Construction begins June 24, 2026, and the new bridge is expected to open in early summer 2027.

What features will the new bridge include?

The new bridge will include access ramps on both the north and south sides of Highway 62 to improve access for people with mobility challenges or those who want to walk, bike or roll to and from Rosland Park. It will also be built with greater clearance above the highway to help prevent vehicle strikes like those that occurred in 2022.

The selected bridge concept features partial decorative steel cladding designed to create an attractive and welcoming gateway into the community.

Will the current pedestrian bridge remain open during construction?

No. Beginning June 24, 2026, the current pedestrian bridge will close for the duration of the project. During construction, pedestrians can use Valley View Road to travel between Rosland Park and neighborhoods north of Highway 62.

What should visitors know about accessing Rosland Park during construction?

All Rosland Park amenities and trails will remain open during construction, though visitors may need to use different routes to access some areas of the park.

    • The existing pedestrian bridge over Highway 62 will be closed for the duration of the project. Pedestrians can use Valley View Road to travel between Rosland Park and neighborhoods north of Highway 62.
    • Drivers will not be able to travel between the Mooty Pickleball Courts and the north parking lot of the Edina Aquatic Center on West 64th Street because a portion of the roadway will be used for construction staging and equipment.
    • Access to the Edina Aquatic Center is from the park's main entrances off Valley View Road or West 66th Street.
    • Access to the Art Center and Mooty Pickleball Courts is from the west via West 64th Street.
    • One or two holes of the disc golf course may be temporarily closed during construction.

A Rosland Park Access Map (JPG) showing the bridge and road closure in relation to park amenities is available under Map Resources on this project page.

How will construction affect Highway 62 traffic?

Most traffic impacts are expected to be minimal. However:

    • The westbound Highway 62 on-ramp from Valley View Road will be closed through fall 2026, with additional closures possible in 2027.
    • Occasional lane closures may occur during construction.
    • Two weekend closures of Highway 62 will be needed during construction to remove the existing bridge and place the new structure.

First Weekend Closure: 10 p.m. Friday, June 26, through 5 a.m. Monday, June 29, 2026. Highway 62 will be closed to through traffic in both directions between Highway 100 and Interstate 35W to allow for safe removal of the existing bridge.

Detour maps will be posted under Map Resources on this project page when available.

Will Fourth of July activities still take place at Rosland Park?

Yes. All scheduled Fourth of July festivities in Rosland Park will take place as planned.

Visitors coming to the park for the food trucks, concert or fireworks should be aware of the pedestrian bridge closure, partial West 64th Street closure and the westbound Highway 62 on-ramp closure from Valley View Road.

Will the bridge have separate walking and biking lanes?

No. The bridge is designed as a shared-use connection for people walking, biking and rolling and will not have separate lanes.

    Who owns the bridge?

The current pedestrian bridge is owned and managed by the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT). Once the new bridge is complete, ownership will transfer to the City of Edina.

How is the project being funded?

The project is expected to cost about $8 million and will be funded through a combination of secured State funding ($6.2 million), the Pedestrian and Cyclist Safety Fund ($800,000), Municipal State Aid ($600,000) and the Centennial Lakes Tax-Increment Financing District ($400,000).
