The City of Edina has initiated the South Trunk Sanitary Sewer Improvements project in your area to renew and enhance infrastructure, ensure long-term service reliability, and better prepare for redevelopment. Over the next few months, the City of Edina will listen to and keep the public informed, acknowledge concerns, and address any impact to the public. We will work to ensure considerations are reflected in the option we develop and provide feedback on how public input influenced the final project design plans.

Planning and design ends in December 2025. Construction is estimated to be phased between 2026 and 2030.

Residents were invited to two open houses on July 28 and August 4, 2025, respectively. Staff heard lots of comments at those meetings and by email on pedestrian safety and traffic volume & speed. Residents also completed two separate questionnaires on transportation and parking. The parking questions led stall to install no parking signs and shoulder striping on both side of 72nd Street from Lynmar Ln to Cornelia Dr in 2025.

Staff considered all this information to develop a balanced, preferred concept for construction in 2026. The concept keeps the existing 5-ft sidewalk on the north with a varied boulevard, installs a 24-ft wide street with two 12-ft drive lanes, and adds an 8-ft wide sidewalk with a varied boulevard on the south side. An exhibit of this preferred concept is posted in the document section with an image included with this update. Council will review the project on Monday, December 8 at 6 pm. A formal notice will be sent to the residents with potential assessments. You are also welcome to submit comments and feedback by emailing cmillner@edinamn.gov, put 72nd Street Design Comment in the subject line. Thanks

The first phase of field work is now complete, including the topographic survey and initial geotechnical investigations. Over the next month, the project team will be reviewing existing site conditions and evaluating potential construction methods for the new sanitary sewer. The alternatives analysis will explore both traditional open-cut construction and trenchless installation techniques for the mainline of the sanitary sewer.

Residents will have the opportunity to learn more about the project status and the alternative options being considered at an in-person open house this summer--stay tuned for more information. The public will have the opportunity to provide feedback on the alternatives as well as other questions or concerns they may have related to the project. Meeting materials will also be available for review on the project website.
