Vernon Avenue & Highway 100 Interchange Project
The City of Edina partnering with Hennepin County in coordination with Minnesota Department of Transportation, is replacing the bridge over Highway 100 and the Vernon Avenue Bridge (County Road 158) over the Canadian Pacific (CP) Railroad. The overall project will also improve the intersections at Interlachen Boulevard, Gus Young Lane, Arcadia Avenue and the Highway 100 on- and off-ramps.
The size of the existing sidewalk and the lack of separation from heavy traffic make this street uncomfortable for many pedestrians, creating a significant barrier within the Grandview District. Additionally, the interchange with TH 100 is a complicated and redundant system of six unique access ramps that connect to four different streets within the district.
This project improves safety and mobility for all users and eliminates redundant access ramps.
Project goals
o Improve safety and mobility for all users
o Create new separated pedestrian routes
o Improve traffic operations
o Consolidate TH 100 access points
o Improve connectivity between residential and commercial areas of the district
o Replace Vernon Ave bridge meeting CP Rail clearance requirements
o Limit construction impacts to the public and create greater funding efficiency by combining city
and county projects
o Enhance economic viability with improved access
Changes to be made
Arcadia Avenue
- Addition of 10-foot-wide sidewalk and ADA-compliant pedestrian ramps
- New streetlights
Minnesota Highway 100
- Removal of redundant on- and off ramps and the creation of a tight diamond interchange
- New noise wall along northbound on-ramp
Interlachen Boulevard and Gus Young Lane
- Addition of 10-foot-wide sidewalks and ADA-compliant pedestrian ramps
- New left turn lanes
- New traffic signal with ADA-compliant audible crossings
- New ADA-compliant entrance into Edina Liquor
Vernon Avenue and W. 50th St.
Two new bridges:
- New Vernon Avenue Bridge that is widened and raised to meet railroad height requirements
- New Highway 100 Bridge that creates space for the below improvements:
- 10-foot-wide sidewalks and ADA-compliant pedestrian ramps
- Pedestrian refuge islands
- New dual left-turn lanes in both east and west directions
- New traffic signals with ADA-compliant audible crossings

Share Does the abutment slope (under the CPKC railroad bridge), of large rip rap rocks, get drizzled with concrete to stabilize, like all the other overpasses to stabilize over cp in edina? Not sure if your familiar with this, but to give you some background, there are 3 current vehicle overpasses that go over the railroad with drizzled concrete for slope erosion (benton ave, valley view rd, crosstown highway 62) and about 2 with dirt slopes (Gus Young Ln, W 78th st.) This one I do not know about yet. UknowwhoIam asked 26 days agoThanks for the questions. There are lots of things left to do. I should have been more specific. They need the deck to cure for a specified amount of time. When the deck is ready, pour the sidewalk, median, and concrete barriers on the bridge. Finish utility work on the west side of the bridge. Install railings, lights, and pavement markings on the bridge. Install gravel base materials between the bridge and street, place bituminous, traffic signals, pedestrian ramps, sidewalks, lights, and other misc. items. Lots of items left to complete prior to the road opening. Thanks

Detour Dan asked about 1 month agoThanks for the question. Two reasons, the Opus Project started before the bridge. Recall, Xcel Energy and CPKC Railroad did not work out an agreement until late September / early October. No work could occur until that agreement was in place. Second, we decided not to pay additional millions of dollars for winter work. Opus decided to work thru the winter.

Share I have not been to the railroad bridge site, in a while.. It seems rip rap has been laid down underneathe bridge. Will riprap rocks be sloped on both abutments or just the East facing side? to add, Will rip rap be added on side slopes (Areas directly next to abutment(s) or will that space me left for hydroseed and seedlings? Also once beam placing is finshed when will they start to form the forms for the concrete pouring? Thanks again. Jarred A. on Facebook Share I have not been to the railroad bridge site, in a while.. asked about 1 month agoThanks for the question. Rip rap is placed at both abutments and the adjacent slopes will be seeded. Beams have been placed and they are in the process of forming the deck for concrete.
Thanks, Derek Huston

What types of trees were cut down to go fourth with this project,
Luke asked about 2 months agoVolunteer scrub / invasive type trees around the Highway 100 bridge, near the railroad bridge, near Davanni's and near Holiday. If you want a copy of the removal plans, please email me separately. In my opinion, none of the removals provided any screening to the residential properties that are not getting a noise wall. Thanks, Chad Millner
