The City of Edina partnering with Hennepin County in coordination with Minnesota Department of Transportation, is replacing the bridge over Highway 100 and the Vernon Avenue Bridge (County Road 158) over the Canadian Pacific (CP) Railroad. The overall project will also improve the intersections at Interlachen Boulevard, Gus Young Lane, Arcadia Avenue and the Highway 100 on- and off-ramps.

The size of the existing sidewalk and the lack of separation from heavy traffic make this street uncomfortable for many pedestrians, creating a significant barrier within the Grandview District. Additionally, the interchange with TH 100 is a complicated and redundant system of six unique access ramps that connect to four different streets within the district.

This project would improve safety and mobility for all users and eliminate redundant access ramps. Construction is anticipated to begin April 21.

Project goals

o Improve safety and mobility for all users

o Create new separated pedestrian routes

o Improve traffic operations

o Consolidate TH 100 access points

o Improve connectivity between residential and commercial areas of the district

o Replace Vernon Ave bridge meeting CP Rail clearance requirements

o Limit construction impacts to the public and create greater funding efficiency by combining city

and county projects

o Enhance economic viability with improved access

Changes to be made

Arcadia Avenue

  • Addition of 10-foot-wide sidewalk and ADA-compliant pedestrian ramps
  • New streetlights

Minnesota Highway 100

  • Removal of redundant on- and off ramps and the creation of a tight diamond interchange
  • New noise wall along northbound on-ramp

Interlachen Boulevard and Gus Young Lane

  • Addition of 10-foot-wide sidewalks and ADA-compliant pedestrian ramps
  • New left turn lanes
  • New traffic signal with ADA-compliant audible crossings
  • New ADA-compliant entrance into Edina Liquor

Vernon Avenue and W. 50th St.

Two new bridges:

  1. New Vernon Avenue Bridge that is widened and raised to meet railroad height requirements
  2. New Highway 100 Bridge that creates space for the below improvements:
    • 10-foot-wide sidewalks and ADA-compliant pedestrian ramps
    • Pedestrian refuge islands
    • New dual left-turn lanes in both east and west directions
    • New traffic signals with ADA-compliant audible crossings

From South 100 how do I get to 5101 Vernon Ave.?

Lynn Roback asked 2 days ago

Thanks for the question. The Highway 100 southbound off-ramp is currently open. The ramp will exit at Arcadia Ave. 5101 Vernon can be accessed by going either north or south on Arcadia and using the other existing roads in the area. Later this summer, that ramp will close. Continue to follow this website for updates. Thanks

  • Share You indicated that the south-bound entrance onto 100 from Eden will be closed in the future. What can we do to petition that the entrance not be closed? For traffic coming North on the frontage roads, East along Eden, West over the Eden bridge, or exiting the Kumon building or Hilltop, that entrance is the most convenient. To reroute all that traffic up Arcadia so that it can join the Vernon on-ramp to South 100 is not practical. Arcadia is too narrow for that volume of traffic, especially with the on-street parking for the Hilltop and the lines that form to enter Starbucks. I believe you previously stated that where the two south-bound ramps combine is a source for numerous traffic accidents. However, the solution is not to close the one ramp -- better options must exist that will not so drastically impact the local community and existing traffic patterns. Thank you for your consideration. on Facebook Share You indicated that the south-bound entrance onto 100 from Eden will be closed in the future. Thanks for the comments. MnDOT and City staff have reviewed the operations and safety hazards of the merge for the southbound Highway 100 on-ramps. Additional signage has been tried. We do not believe there are other options to mitigate the safety hazards. The new interchange can handle the traffic if the ramp is closed. We will review traffic operations again after the project. Most likely that ramp will be closed. Thanks, Chad Millner.

  • Share The lane shift you have eastbound near the left turn to Wells Fargo and the Walgreens is exit is an accident waiting to happen. In the brief time it has been there (2 weeks?). I have either been in or seen 4 near accidents. People are confused about the 1st left to Wells Fargo and the weave to the north lane. Some think to go straight they should get in the “left turn” lane. Even if people understand that you have created 2 lanes the traffic from turning left and weaving has no separation. I don’t know what the solution is, but some rearrangement or enhanced marking would be an improvement. This is just a wish: Another thing that would be an improvement is some kind of throttling of people going left onto Interlachen at a couple of rush hour times. At this point, it is very difficult to get a gap in traffic to turn left onto Interlachen from Brookside. Combining the traffic coming from Vernon to Interlachen and the poor visibility of cars coming around the curve, it is a jam yourself in and floor it to make that turn. Is there any chance to coordinate with Edina and St Louis Park enhanced signage of speed limits on Brookside? It is obvious that people taking it as a detour are rushing. on Facebook Share The lane shift you have eastbound near the left turn to Wells Fargo and the Walgreens is exit is an accident waiting to happen. Thanks for the suggestions and questions. All the traffic control on Vernon and Interlachen will be shifted next week. We will adjust it with your comments in mind. Please reach back out late next week if you think there are still issues for us to review. Thanks, Chad Millner, City Engineer.

Thanks for the questions. That was not related to the City's Interchange Project. We were unaware of those lanes closures until this morning also. Our understanding is that those were short term and not affecting traffic now. Thanks

Can you block off & remove roads that aren't actually needed instead. Too many lights. Learn round abouts. Would fix some traffic problems. Thanks for the comments and suggestions. I will kindly disagree that we don't need the existing road network and number of east-west connections. Multiple traffic studies have suggested otherwise. Thanks.

Thanks for the note and understand the concern. We will review that request with the traffic safety committee. Please note that adding flashing lights takes way more time than you think if approved. Procuring the materials and installation can take months. I'm going to guess that this intersection probably won't qualify for those but we will review. Thanks

Thanks for the note. I'm not sure I understand the exact location. The traffic signal at the top of the southbound off-ramp from Hwy 100 at Vernon Ave / 50th St will be removed and replaced as part of this project. The removal of the signal will occur soon. The traffic signal at Interlachen and Vernon will also be removed and replaced. A new traffic signal will be installed on the east side of the new Hwy100 bridge. Thanks

  • Share the grandview neighborhood (everything south of eden avenue, east of vernon, and west of the railroad tracks) has one exit route from the neighborhood - Eden Avenue. We cannot take any alternate route around the construction without first exiting the neighborhood at Eden Avenue. Routing all traffic for this project down eden avenue creates a significant challenge for the 100's of families living in that neighborhood, as well as the 100s of people using the library, senior center and office building. Most of the time (definitely not all of the time) traffic traveling east on Eden is "polite" and enables cars and pedestrians to cross, but north bound traffic is less so. During construction, while you are routing all traffic down Eden Avenue, a "4-way" stop at grandview square and eden avenue would help ensure safety as cars and people attempt to exit the neighborhood. Prior to construction It was already challenging to exit grandview neighborhood, with cars speeding east as they came off of Vernon and around the eden avenue curve (even more so as a pedestrian). One additional observation - there are 2 very large stop signs as cars come off of hwy 100 and proceed over vernon - despite no cross traffic. I posted another question regarding placing stop signs at Acadia and the off ramp. If stop signs are warranted at hwy 100 and vernon for (presumably) construction vehicles, then they are surely more than warranted at the two locales I've requested to aid in the equitable flow of traffic for those most impacted by the construction project - the Grandview neighborhood. Appreciate the consideration. on Linkedin Email the grandview neighborhood (everything south of eden avenue, east of vernon, and west of the railroad tracks) has one exit route from the neighborhood - Eden Avenue. Thanks for those details. We will monitor that intersection with the upcoming start of traffic control stage 2A on May 9. In the mean time, please remember to push the flashing crosswalk lights if you're trying to cross Eden Ave on foot or bike. Thanks
