Fred Richards Park Master Plan Implementation

Fred Richards Park is being created from the former Fred Richards Golf Course. The 43-acre site, almost double the size of Centennial Lakes Park, will become a multi-use park for a variety of activities year round.

Fred Richards Park will subtly divide into sections, providing different experiences for people and nature. It also includes what was formerly known as Lake Edina Park.

Central Green includes

Pickleball and basketball courts
Lawn games and stage/pavilion areas
Clubhouse renovation
Landscaping, turf and walkways
Parking and access via West 77th Street

The Wetland Preserve includes

Wetlands and nature enhancement and restoration
Trees and shrubs
Play nodes
Wildlife habitat structures
Trail

Great Lawn and Loop includes

New trail
Open lawn play area with high-quality drainage
Picnic pavilion
Traditional and inclusive playgrounds

The $17.7 million in funding will come from the half-cent sales tax Edina voters approved in November 2022.

The City has begun refining the Fred Richards Park Master Plan with Confluence and Consultants. In order to further refine these designs more information about the site must be gathered. You may observe numerous consultants gathering info throughout the park. A site survey was completed in mid September. Other survey work includes an archeological survey, and additional soil samples. Consultants will also be re-evaluating wetlands and existing vegetation.
Once we gather all this information designers will use it to help create final design layout and create documents for construction. Please have patience with the project team as we move forward. Many components of design including but not limited to the Wetland Bank, Trail head and Facility, and other landscape features will take time and authorizations as we develop them. Our current timeline includes a year of design before implementation can take place.
