East Rink Frost and Construction Update

October 9, 2026

The earth beneath Braemar Arena’s East Rink tested negative for frost today, clearing the way for construction to resume next week. Ground Thaw Units were installed and began heating the rink floor Sept. 11, after crews removed two feet of sand to allow heating tubes and thermal pads to be placed closer to the top of the frost.

Construction in the East Rink was paused in late August after an engineering firm measured frost extending as deep as 12 feet in some areas of the rink floor. After four weeks of remediation work, tests conducted today by an engineering firm confirmed that the frost has been removed.

East Rink Next Steps:

  • Ground Thaw Units will be removed Monday.
  • Construction will resume with installation of a new subfloor heating system and coolant pipes.
  • A new concrete rink floor will be poured and then cured for 28 days.
  • The East Rink is currently scheduled to be available for play by Dec. 26.

While there are no guarantees we won’t encounter another unforeseen obstacle that could impact this timeline, Braemar staff and construction crews are committed to making every day productive and completing the work as quickly as possible, so the East Rink is ready for skaters as soon as possible.
