Strachauer Park Master Plan

A Master Plan will guide the future of Strachauer Park, and the City of Edina is seeking input from park users and those who live near the park in creating that plan.
The five-acre park at 6200 Beard Ave. features a playground, picnic areas, basketball court, soccer fields, skating area and a hockey rink that serves as a small dog off-leash area in summer.
Key parts of the Master Plan will address:
- Updating the playground with new playground equipment
- Providing a park building that can serve the community’s needs for rentals, a gathering space and park uses, as the current building is functionally obsolete
- Programming such as playground programs for the area residents
- Adding amenities sought by the surrounding residents and park users
- Improving natural features
The Master Plan will include both short- and long-term improvements. Currently, money has been designated in the Capital Improvement Plan for the new playground equipment, however, funding for other amenities and improvements will come over time. Having a Master Plan will enable the City to quickly address and update on the areas of the plan as funding becomes available.
In developing the Master Plan, many factors and views will be considered including:
- Accessiblility
- Equity
- Health opportunities
- Impacts of Minnesota Highway 62 (Crosstown Highway)
- Inclusivity
- Maintenance needs
- Role of Strachauer in relation to nearby Chowen and Pamela parks
- Stormwater management and environmental impacts
- Sustainability
- Transportation issues
Your Participation
The input of residents, park users and potential park users will drive the Master Plan. Ways you can participate include following this project page, attending a workshop, and responding to an online survey this fall.
This project page will be updated throughout the process.
Thank you for your help in developing this plan for Strachauer Park.

NeighborFriend asked 12 months agoThank you for you question. When soliciting design we have asked vendors for a Fall 2024 installation window. We are projecting for after school is back in session in order to minimize disturbances. Because this is a new container and playground, it will likely be a few weeks for demolition and excavation and then another 3 weeks for playground installation, overall it will likely be about a month and a half of disturbance weather dependent. Once a vendor is selected and playground is ordered we should be able to provide a more accurate window. The existing playground will be removed as will the pea gravel. That area will be re-graded and grass seed added.

BK22 asked about 2 years agoWe have started work with a consultant to examine existing playground and proposed playground location. After verifying locations viability we will engage the neighborhood through surveys to start the design process. The design and engagement process is anticipated to wrap up in Fall or Late Winter and recommendation will go to Council. Playground installation would be Spring 2024 dependent on availability and weather delays.

Share My biggest question is Strachauer Park a local park or part of a bigger community of the Edina Park and Rec organization. As a local park we need amenities that provide services to the local residents ( a block or two radius of the park). If we are part of the bigger picture and people need to drive to enjoy the amenities , then additional parkingi is required. Currently during the seasonal soccer practices, the "local" residents have very little access to their own homes on the weekends. The streets are impassible due to vehicle parking supporting the activities. There has been times I/we have not even been able to get out of our own driveways and if there was an emergency, the emergency vehicle could not even get through. on Facebook Share My biggest question is Strachauer Park a local park or part of a bigger community of the Edina Park and Rec organization. Joe asked over 2 years agoHi Joe,
Thanks for your question. Strachauer Park plays a role in our entire City Park System as well as to serve the local neighborhood. This is common with many parks in Edina. As part of this master plan process we hope to better understand how the community views the role of Strachauer Park and the relationship it has to Chowen Park and Pamela Park. We hear that one of the main concerns of Strachauer is that it plays a part in supporting seasonal athletic activities and we understand your concerns for traffic and safety. Our Engineering Department is doing a traffic study around Strachauer Park and the neighborhood which will help inform decisions going into the next soccer season. If you have additional ideas/thoughts about what amenities you would like to see at Strachauer Park in the future, please share those on the ideas tab of the project page.
Thank you for taking the time to reach out.

Cynthia J Miller asked over 2 years agoHi Cynthia,
That's a great question. As you know, many of Strachauer Park's amenities were built long before today's accessibility standards. The new design will be built to the latest standards. A new park shelter, would be ADA accessible, as would its restrooms. The new playground, including its surface, will meet ADA standards. You might have other items you wish to see in the park and make sure they are accessible, and we'd love to hear them. We hope you participate in the community input process as we work to develop concept designs.
