72nd Street Improvements

The contractor ran into a few issues during yesterday's watermain work. The duration of the planned water outages extended past what was indicated on the shutdown notice. This directly affected multiple properties on Cornelia Drive. The project team apologizes for any inconvenience and appreciates all the patience and understanding.

Work Completed the Week of July 27th

• Xcel Energy continued power related relocations
• Centerpoint Energy worked on turf and street restorations
• The sewer bypassing system was modified, tested, and is now in operation
• The City's contractor began mobilizing construction equipment
• Construction materials such as piping and structures were delivered to the site
• Properties affected by next week's water shutdown were notified via door-to-door paper notifications

Work Planned for the Week of August 3rd

• Xcel Energy will finish up power related relocations
• Water main connections will occur at W. 72nd/Cornelia Drive
• As part of the water main connections, a water shutdown is tentatively planned for Monday (8/3), affected properties were notified
• Storm sewer work at the intersection of Cornelia Drive & W. 72nd Street will begin.

Residential Access

• Residents living on Cornelia Drive south of W. 72nd should use Glouchester Avenue for access in/out during the workday (7 am to 7 pm)
• Please reference the residential access map for suggested routes through the project area during the week of 8/3. This map will be updated as the project progresses.

• Phase 1 removals were completed

Work Plan for the Week of July 27th

• Xcel Energy will finish up power related relocations
• The sewer bypassing piping will be getting tested and will run after testing
• Storm sewer work at the intersection of Cornelia Drive & W. 72nd Street will begin. Residents living on Cornelia Drive south of W. 72nd should use Glouchester Avenue for access in/out during the workday (7 am to 7 pm)

Work Completed the Week of July 13th

• Centerpoint Energy finished their gas main relocations and upgrades for their work on W. 72nd Street.
• Xcel Energy began power pole relocations.
• The sewer bypassing piping was installed along the north side of W. 72nd Street, short-term intersection closures occurred as the contractor buried the piping underneath the roadway.
• The sewer bypass piping was connected into a manhole between Lynmar Lane & France Avenue. Eastbound and westbound W. 72nd traffic will encounter a stopping to take turns requirement with only the south side lane open. The project team suggests accessing from the north as much as possible.
• Phase 1 removals occurred.

• Xcel Energy will continue with their relocations.
• Phase 1 removals will be completed.
• Storm sewer work at the intersection of Cornelia Drive & W. 72nd Street will begin. Residents living on Cornelia Drive south of W. 72nd should use Glouchester Avenue for access in/out during the workday (7 am to 7 pm).

Residential Access

The City's contractor will be working on burying the dual 18" bypass piping today. This work will require temporary closures on the north side of the roadway as the piping gets buried and backfilled. Project team members will be on-site to help facilitate traffic as best as they are able to. Intersections will be immediately reopened once the piping has been buried.

Work Completed the Week of July 6

• CenterPoint Energy continued working on gas main relocations and upgrades, which required a lane closure of southbound France Avenue.
• Necessary trees, shrubs and brush were removed in the project area.
• Asphalt in pave one was turned into roadway gravel.

Work Planned for the Week of July 13

• CenterPoint Energy's will finish their work in the 72nd Street are early to mid-week.
• Xcel Energy will begin pole relocations.
• Pavement and sidewalk removals will begin in Phase 1.
• Two, large sewer bypass pipes will be set up to maintain service during construction.
  • The above-ground pipe will run along the north side of 72nd Street between Oaklawn Avenue and France Avenue, and it will be buried at intersections for easier vehicle access.
  • There may be some short-term intersection closures as crews bury the pipe.

The closure of 72nd from Oaklawn Ave to Lynmar Ln goes live today. If you want to view a live-map of roads closed to help plan your route, we provide our closures to the 3rd party Waze map you can view on the Waze App. Alternatively keep checking back as we post schedule updates.

For those who typically use 72nd to Cornelia to exit from the west;

• For eastbound 70th and Southbound France - Wooddale Ave or West Shore Dr provide alternatives
• For westbound 70th - West Shore Drive and Normandale Road provide alternatives

For those south of 72nd in the closure area;

• Head north though the zone and use Mavelle Dr and go west to Cornelia for westbound 70th and east to Heatherton, Bristol, or Lynmar for Eastbound

Northbound France to 72nd Enter

• Use 70th instead and route south as appropriate to your destination.
• For those west of Cornelia, use Wooddale Ave, West Shore Dr or Normandale Rd

Take Special Note - Currently planned for July 13 through 15, small spot closures related to Centerpointe Energy gas service work will close Wooddale at 70th, West Shore Drive just north and south of Gilford.

Construction is starting soon! The preconstruction meeting for the West 72nd Street Improvements was held last week. Ryan Contracting plans to start construction the week of July 7. On site this week are private utility companies completing relocation of their utilities before the city's contractor starts work next week.

The contractor plans to complete the work in 3 phases:

Phase 1: (west of) Cornelia Drive to (east of) Glouchester Avenue

Phase 2: (east of) Glouchester Avenue to (west of) France Avenue

Phase 3: France Avenue intersection

The proposed schedule for July is as follows:

Week of July 7

• Tree removals, all phases
• Set up sanitary sewer bypass

Week of July 13

• Continue set up of sanitary sewer bypass
• Temporary water set up
• Phase 1 Removals (street, sidewalk, curb)

Week of July 20

• Phase 1 utility construction

Week of July 27

• Phase 1 utility construction

Weekly updates will be shared here the end of each week. The construction team; contractor representative or city representatives: Josh and Francis, will provide updates to individual properties if they are directly impacted by construction activities (access to property, water shutdown, etc.). The West 72^nd Street Improvement Project went out for bids in April, and the project was awarded to Ryan Contracting at the May 5^th City Council Meeting. No official start date for construction has been set, but construction is expected to begin in the next month. Final design and construction details are based on preliminary design and feedback from residents received during the public engagement process.

This project will fully reconstruct West 72^nd Street between France Avenue and Cornelia Drive, and includes narrowing the roadway and adding an 8 foot sidewalk on the south side of the street. The project will also replace underground utilities including sanitary sewer and watermain, as well as spot storm sewer replacements.
