West 72nd Street Intersection Closures Update

Due to the complexity of coordinating multiple improvements, the following estimates are subject to change, so check back for more updates.

Oaklawn and Claremore Drive/72nd Street intersection: This intersection will remain closed into October and may have additional closures for intersection improvements related to the separate safe routes to school project.

72nd and Cornelia Dr intersection: The intersection of Cornelia Dr and 72nd is anticipated to reopen to vehicles during the week of September 25. We are working to coordinate with the separate safe routes to school project and may be able to limit future closures of this intersection in time and scope. We are unable to create a pedestrian path through this intersection at this time.

    Construction Update:

The next two weeks will see additional heavy excavators on site as we make the connections from the Oaklawn/Claremore/72nd intersection into the new station. The odor control system at the existing station will be replaced with a temporary system and lift station odor sealing to make room for deep pipe work.

West 72nd Street will be closed from the intersections of Claremore Drive and Oaklawn Ave to Cornelia Drive.

The lift station project requires work to occur in 72nd Street to install new sanitary sewer pipes under the road while it is closed. The road closure has started. This work was pushed up in the schedule for two reasons. The first is to try to limit impacts to Edina schools and busing. By starting now, a portion of the work can be completed while school is out of session. This work will carry over into the school year. Staff is working with Edina schools and their busing operations near the school. Second, if this work did not occur now, it would be done next spring. This would create impacts to both residents and school operations for a second time. The project team wants to try to limit impacts by constructing a majority of the work this year.

Since the last update we've hit a snag, the dewatering took longer than anticipated but the contractor worked to install a piezometer and more pumps to pull the water level down while watching the pressure so that the base slab could be poured. Magney construction is forming up the final pour for the wet well to bring the structure up to the planned grade in the next week. In the month ahead the project will be moving into the road with rolling road closures of the intersections of Claremore/Oaklawn/72nd and 72nd/Cornelia.

In the last month we've finished sinking the caisson. The final depth was within 0.02 feet of the planned depth and a bottom concrete seal has been poured. Northern Dewatering has set up point wells around the new wet well and has begun dewatering to allow for access to bottom to begin pouring the floor slab and wet well divider wall that will split the space into two wet wells.

In the last month another two sections have been poured and cured and the caisson continues to sink down. In this photo you can see the 21' caisson section about 1/2 way down and the crane using it's clamshell to excavate the center.

Its been a busy week building lift station 6, in these photos you see:

Iron workers forming up the reinforcing steel for the next pour,

concrete trucks pouring into a pump truck while engineers take sample material for testing,

and laborers pouring the second caisson section

Today the site is quiet, as we wait for the concrete to cure. The earlier pour has cured for 1 month and is already beyond it's design strength of 5000 pounds per square inch (psi), most is even over 7000psi. As the new section comes up to strength we'll start sinking the caisson again before getting ready for the next pour.

Thank you to all the partners making the work safe and possible, and the neighborhood for their interest and hospitality.

After digging and shoring a working area about 12-14' below ground, Magney Construction and their workers from Laborers Local 563 and local iron workers formed up, reinforced and poured the 'cutting shoe' for the new Edina lift station 6. Workers from Braun Intertec, Cemstone, and Barr Engineering made sure the concrete was in top form and met the design provided by Wenzel Engineering and Nucor steel.

In this photo you can see the crane taking position near the newly poured concrete 'cutting shoe' structure. The next step will be to 'sink' the structure by excavating out the middle. This part of the works will never be seen again, but will form the base and deepest part of the structure 3 stories down. For more on the caisson method of construction we are using check out the video in the updates on this page.

In the last month we've installed shoring and dug a big hole. At the bottom we've started to install forms.

In the next month we'll be pouring a concrete rectangle with a 'cutting edge' that will create the deepest part of the station. We'll set up a crane and begin excavating the middle of the concrete rectangle to sink the cutting edge.
